Can going after the big fish bring a big affiliate paycheck? Yes...
here's how people like you are making money by deep trawling the 'net
for big profits.
Big things and big business, equal big affiliate commissions. Common
and abundant things - on the other hand - mean little commissions, but
a lot more often.
Ask any fisherman. They'll tell you that, if they're going after small
fish like Rainbow Trout or Sole, they'll probably catch a lot. If they
go after big fish like King Salmon, they usually don't net anything,
but when they do... woo hoo... 40 pounds of steak! Big game affiliate
marketing is a lot like that.
Yes, it's true, big orders happen every day. Personally, a couple of
years back, I experienced a huge order from the US Navy, from an
aircraft carrier no less. They ordered a ship load of "bag phone"
batteries for the Marines.
Shortly after, came a massive order of phones and accessories for a
nuclear power plant. They wanted the hands-free walkie talkie feature -
that did not rely on cellular signals - for communicating inside the
plant.
One person used a popular keyword service, to find low competition
keywords, and netted an order worth over a quarter million dollars.
Hundreds of people wrote me asking for clues and tips.
Now I can't divulge the exact nature of the product sold, but I can
tell you it was a big, expensive item, and the customer ordered lots of
them. Look outside your window and what do you see? Anything big?
The construction industry is huge. So are trucking, shipping, forestry,
mining, printing, farming, armed forces, governments, food services,
hospitality, professional sports, power plants, hospitals and medical
services... whew, the list goes on!
Buyers for big industries place big orders. And they often use the
internet as a research tool to find suppliers. So how do you find these
big buyers?
Try watching the news and take note of upcoming events, it can bring
some valuable clues. For example, the Olympics are coming to a city
near where I live. There's already a shortage of building supplies,
setting off a chain of events.
Consider Bob. He owns a decent sized fabrication shop and they do a lot
of welding. He's landed an Olympic bid, and his current supplier cannot
fulfill his needs. He decides to use the internet to find a new one.
Bob's first order will be in the 25,000 range. There are only 35,000
competing pages for, "aluminum welding rods." The good news is, any
junior SEO should be able to nail this phrase. Will Bob find your
affiliate site?
Here's another clue, look at the print advertising and flyers delivered
to your door. When I was in the printing industry, I saw a single order
of flyers, for a tire company, worth over 1.2 million dollars. Needless
to say, practically every home in the USA got the same eight page flyer
advertising tires.
This "cultural event" sparked a massive search on the internet for
tires. Not just people comparison shopping for car tires, but also
reminded Jake, the open pit mine foreman in Utah, that two of their
"giant earth movers" needed new tires. He turned to the internet to
find them. Can you imagine the commission on those suckers?
Oh right, I almost forgot... so what are the Trout, Sole and other
small game fish on the web? It's the common consumable items like;
batteries, t-shirts, table cloths, bed in a bag, specialty foods,
camping gear and toilet flappers. Yes, something as simple as a piece
of rubber in the potty.
Think about it for a second, there are billions of toilets in the
world. They all break down at some point. There is something called a
"toilet flapper" inside almost all of them. Yet, there are less than
3,500 competing pages. My Grandma could nail top spot for that search
phrase. ;-)
So as you look around the room, don't just think about what you are
looking at. Think about what's inside it. How did it get there? Who
made it? What's it made of?
Consider what their needs were, the raw materials, as they manufactured
it, and shipped it. What parts will need replacement, at least once in
the life cycle of the product? Are you getting any ideas yet?
Are you ready for a challenge? Ready to be enthusiastic about what you
are doing? Ready to enjoy the process, not just the goals? Remember, if
you go after the big fish you'll get big affiliate commissions. If you
go after the small fish, you'll make less, but a lot more often. But
all that really matters, is that you get into action now.
So what are you going to do next Saturday? Watch cartoons, or start
making money with affiliate programs?
