How do I educate myself when there are so many self proclaimed gurus and so many choices available? I'd like to learn, but how do I know I'm buying from an expert in their field.
Ask around and see what other people are recommending. Chances are, if you post your question in a moderated forum, you'll get plenty of opinions.
Then for more advice, try emailing a few prominent marketers and see if they give you a response. Many of them are willing to share knowledge and tell you about the tools they use daily. They'll also tell you whose advice they follow and what ebooks and courses to choose.
I would say choose your path, or your guru, and arm yourself with the knowledge and tools they recommend, to get you where you want to be in life.
A lot of it depends on you, your personality, and what you want to do. But without having coached you before, or knowing any specifics about you, or your background, I can only offer the following...
Do you want to play the free search engine traffic game? There are courses available for that. The TNT Guide is excellent for beginners, while the monthly Winning the Search Engine Wars continues as the undisputed choice of champions.
TNT (Totally Non-Technical) Guide ==> http://www.cdzn.com/tnt
Winning the Search Engine Wars ==> http://www.cdzn.com/pob
If you want software to build your sites for you, and assist you in creating search engine friendly pages, then Dr. Andy Williams SEO Website Builder is perfect. Even raw beginners get good results.
SEO Website Builder Software ==> http://www.cdzn.com/wsb
If you don't want to learn about the search engines and just want to pay for instant traffic, John Reese has an excellent business model for that.
John Reese Traffic Secrets ==> http://www.cdzn.com/wow
But whether you pay for traffic or get it free. How do you plan to monetize (make money with) that traffic?
If you want to sell and ship products to consumers, my first ebook, Nothing but 'Net covers that topic in detail and is available as a free downloadable ebook.
If you don't want to touch any physical inventory, and prefer to focus on affiliate revenue, I've written two ebooks on the topic, Clickin' it Rich for beginners and Revenge of the Mininet for advanced students.
Clickin' it Rich ==> http://www.cdzn.com/cir
Revenge of the Mininet ==> http://www.cdzn.com/rev
So ultimately it's up to you, which path you choose. Ask around, choose your guru, follow their advice and you should do ok. Work hard and don't forget... never ever give up. More than anything else, it's your determination and persistence that will lead to success.

I've built a content site using James Martell's model. Traffic is building, but creating lots of content is time consuming. I'm thinking that it might be more efficient to build mini sites, provided they can rank well.
Can stand alone mini sites still rank well these days? Or do have to add a mini net around a mini site for the latter to get good rankings?
It depends on how competitive the keyword phrase is. If there is no competition, sometimes a single page is all that's required.
Yes, you read that right... a single page. You can use either NicheTracker or Dr. Andy Williams Keyword Results Analyzer (KRA) to find the sweet spots with virtually no competition.
Keyword Results Analyzer ==> http://www.cdzn.com/kra
NicheTracker ==> http://www.cdzn.com/ntr
When it comes to a mini site, it doesn't need a lot of incoming links if the "on page" criteria meet the right keyword densities, keyword proximate and semantics. For more competitive keywords, you might need a minisite of five pages. For moderate competition, a ring of five sites with five to ten pages in each site should do the trick.
(Keep your eyes and ears open for the announcement of Revenge of the Mininet version 3.0. We've added the exciting Matrix diagrams, which is the hottest mininet at this time. Plus, Dynamic Linking is moving from just an ebook to a private site with tons of goodies like sample mininets and html code. Those who buy now get a free upgrade to version 3.0)
If you're finding it too time consuming to write content, you might consider paying for it as an alternative to writing it yourself. Many people using the BIG Martell style sites of 50 to 200 pages hire freelance writers from elance.com, or use local high school students.
James Martell's Affiliate Handbook ==> http://www.cdzn.com/amh
So yes, a stand alone minisite can still work wonders. But what's important, is to do your keyword research first. Find the holes where there is lots of traffic but few competing pages.
Start with a single page of two primary keywords and up to four more ancillary ones, that are synonymous... similar yet different, that explain the overall theme of the page. Try not to get too far off track, or the semantics of the page may start leading the search engine to think your page is about something else.
Then try adding up to four more pages for additional - yet related - keywords and see if that doesn't help the whole lot of them rank better and increase traffic. And don't forget, you can always use your mininet or mini sites to boost the link popularity and positioning of your central "Martell" style site.

What's the best way to learn how to optimize web pages for the search engines? I've read a couple of books on it and tried my hand at it, but still can't get better positioning.
That depends on you and your personality. If you're not getting what you need from home study, certainly one of the best ways to learn SEO, is from a hands-on workshop like the ones hosted by John Alexander and Robin Nobles.
Search Engine Workshops ==> http://www.cdzn.com/sew
Not only do they tell you how to do it. They get you do it and watch over your shoulder, correcting any mistakes as they happen
Many of the course graduates go on to professional SEO careers, or become affiliate revenue specialists. And if you need help after the workshop, they include a six month mentoring program after the workshop is done.
They usually have a workshop in a different city every month. You can find out more about attending a workshop near you by visiting the Search Engine Workshops web site
Alternately, if you prefer feedback from software instead of learning from ebooks, it's hard to beat Dr. Williams SEO Website Builder. It advises you on how to craft a top scoring page, does the linking for you, and prevents accidental over-optimization like excessive keyword repetition.
SEO Website Builder Software ==> http://www.cdzn.com/wsb
So there's a lot more you can do than just read ebooks on optimization. But one of the keys - as with anything in life - practice, practice, practice, and never give up. Doesn't matter if you want to play the guitar, pole vault at the Olympics, or get top scoring pages. The more you do it, the better you get at it.

Does your mininet approach work for existing content sites, or do you need to create a tailor made "central" site to make it work?
For example, I have a few content sites (150 - 300 pages each) and I'd like to improve their rankings. They already have many off site links coming in. Wondering if it helps to add a mininet as well.
Yes, the mininet strategy can be applied to almost any marketing mix and boost positioning. They can help your content sites by getting ancillary traffic for keywords that your main site is not optimized for.
For example, if you have a large generic pets site, you can bring in related traffic by setting up a mininet of animal t-shirt sites. Then advertise your main pets site all over the mininet pages.
But with large content sites such as yours, you also might want to look at James Martell's strategy. (I show a diagram similar to his in my Revenge book.) His use of article directories to lead to related articles is just brilliant.
James Martell's Affiliate Marketers Handbook ==> http://www.cdzn.com/amh
You'll also benefit by applying Leslie Rohde's Dynamic Linking strategies to a large content site. By using DL, you can aim your link popularity and PageRank where you want it, as opposed to having it leak all over the place.
If you haven't heard about Dynamic Linking (DL), you get it as a bonus with Revenge of the Mininet. The really cool thing about DL is being able to guide Page Rank (PR) where you want it and still provide full site navigation for humans.

Take a look at this site. It has a Google Page Rank of 6, yet a link search on Google indicates not one single incoming link. Can that PR6 be derived from their internal linking structure?
According to a recent edition of Planet Ocean's Winning the Search Engine Wars newsletter... (You do read Planet Ocean don't you? It's almost impossible to stay on top of the search engine industry and the monthly algorithm changes without it.)
Winning the Search Engine Wars ==> href="http://www.cdzn.com/pob
"You can no longer rely on the link command to give you anywhere near an accurate count of how many incoming links to your site Google actually knows about. Make no mistake, Google is aware of virtually every link pointing to your site(s), they just don't want you to know exactly what they know."
So if you can't rely on Google for accurate reporting of links, what can you rely on? Use a professional SEO tool like OptiLink. It can reverse engineer your competition right down to the color of their skivvies. Hold on, this will take a minute...
OptiLink Link Analysis Software ==> http://www.cdzn.com/opl
Ok, I just ran OptiLink on the site in question to fetch linking pages from Yahoo and the linking page PR from Google. In reality there are a total of five pages on two different domains linking to the site.
In reality, the pages containing the incoming links should be scoring a PR4 or 5 by Google, but they are not. So it is possible that we are seeing results in flux, which may be caused by recent changes in the linking pages.
The old rule of thumb is, Google doesn't like to show back links from pages that are under PR4. While usually true, the filter is more complex than that, because sometimes higher PR linking pages do not show and other times, lower PR linking pages do show.
That said, they could have a bunch of PR3 pages linking to them, and aiming their PR using something like Leslie Rohde's Dynamic Links and you'd never know.
And yes, to answer the second half of your question, internal linking structure is very important to Google. Just as important to PR as external links. Yes! Gasp!... It's true.
Afterall... it is called "page" rank... not "site" rank. To quote my friend Leslie Rohde - programmer of OptiLink, author of Dynamic Linking - when it comes to Google, a page, is a page, is a page.
Usually the PR confusion stems from everyone linking to the home page of a site, giving the home page more PR than the rest of the site. They then think in terms of a "site" having high PR... but that is clearly false.
FYI, geeks should feel free to read the original papers by Page and Brin to figure out how it really works.
PageRank Research Paper ==> http://www-db.stanford.edu/~backrub/google.html
In most cases, we want to concentrate PR in the home page or in the first level of internal pages. If the site owner finds their home page with a PR of 6, they'd be wise to aim that ranking very carefully - using Dynamic Linking - to the most important internal pages of their site, or their best friend's home page ;-)
Dynamic Linking Strategies ==> http://www.cdzn.com/rev
(You get DL as a bonus with purchase of Revenge of the Mininet.)
So in the end... yes, much PR, page reputation and ultimately your positioning for select keywords, can be derived from proper control of your internal linking structure.
