News, Views and Clues

Articles of mine you can use...

Never before - except on rare occasion - have I permitted any of my articles to be reprinted or hosted... all that is about to change. As my gift to you, I have selected over a dozen articles you can use on your web sites and newsletters starting today.

All the articles are very simple looking and on plain white backgrounds. This allows maximum customization.

Don't worry about lots of other people using the same articles as you. My research has shown that the dupe content filters are not very effective unless pages are nearly identical. By permitting so much modification, like I said... no worries.

Here's what you can change. The html file name, fonts, colors, highlighting, document title, description meta tags and opening H1 headline of the articles. You can also add in a keyword meta tag if you like.

Here's the fun - and money making - part. Any time I talk about a specific product, you can use your affiliate link instead of mine. This includes the links in the resource box that link to my products, or when I link to any other product in the article itself.

For example, in the "Custom 404 Kills Spiders" article, where I mention OptiSpider as the solution to a problem. You can leave my affiliate link in there if you want, or you can go join the OptiSpider affiliate program yourself and make a commission on every sale. Cool eh? Let my words and persuasion do the selling for you.

What you can not modify - other than the opening headline - all other "visible" content must remain intact, including the resource box. Be sure to read the terms of use page and it will splain you everything. Enjoy!

Up to 67% more in affiliate revenues...

Want to earn up to 67% more in affiliate revenues? It's something that every Clickbank vendor must do, not only to protect their affiliates, but to earn far more direct sales with their own advertising.

Like many of you, I've invested a lot of time and money trying to protect my affiliate links. With most affiliate programs it's easy enough to stick the link in my htaccess file and I'm protected.

Not with Clickbank though. As you may have read in the last issue, I've switched my bare Clickbank hoplinks over to Adrian Ling's ClickMate system.

It was nearly a year ago when I was emailed by Harvey Segal the Clickbank guru, telling me about this "ClickMate" software that would protect my affiliates from casual theft. I looked at it briefly, but because the product involves scripts, php, databases, programming and the like... I groaned, my eyes glazed over and I got a headache. I don't know anything about that stuff.

So I left my affiliate links as plain Clickbank hoplinks and suggested people use one of the many hoplink "protection" services or software packages that were available. Only problem is... if you haven't checked your Clickbank links for a while, you may not have noticed that your "protected, shielded, guarded, cloaked, or whatever they called it" links don't work like they used to, if they work at all.

Most of the "protected" hoplinks still work in Mozilla and Firefox, but like it or not Explorer is by far the most popular browser, and it's the one where I do my link testing, after the hoplinks are "protected" or put inside of redirects.

In the worst case two of the protection schemes don't work at all. One leaves Explorer staring at a blank white screen. The other causes Explorer to get stuck showing a dialog box complaining it can't read the page, that it cannot decode that type of text.

Of the ones that do work... they barely work. One causes Explorer to display a message that the page has moved and provides a link, but when you click the link your Clickbank ID / nickname gets exposed.

The final one I tested does work, but takes an eternity - over 15 seconds on a cable modem - to redirect, which is a completely unacceptable length of time to be staring at a "page loading" dialog box. On a dial-up connection it took over 30 seconds. Hello... no one is going to wait that long.

Most of these - so called - link protectors, do so by putting your link into a frame, and proceeding to load Clickbank into the frame during the payment process. I'm not sure exactly when Clickbank changed their policy on this, but linking in this manner is in clear violation of their terms of service. That's why they're popping the page out of the frame, exposing the hoplink and nicknames of the vendor and affiliate.

Hello... earth to people selling "link protection" software... linking with frames to Clickbank is no longer allowed.

So what's an affiliate to do? Well, before I panic about having exposed hoplinks, I wanted to do some scientific research to find out how bad the problem of commission theft really is. So some friends and I set up a series of tests.

We set up new Clickbank accounts with new nicknames and sold three different products. A quit smoking ebook, an affiliate revenue how-to book and an SEO product. The smoking book received a mere 6% commission theft. The affiliate how-to 15% theft. The SEO product, an amazing 67% theft rate.

That confirmed my suspicion, there was a direct correlation between the type of product and level of theft. In other words, the more savvy the user, the more likely the commission would be stolen.

(Now don't get me wrong, I love Clickbank. Without their ease of use and simplicity, thousands of publishers - me among them - would never have been able to accept payment 0nline. But because of the simplicity, people buying "pro" level goods can easily bypass the hoplinks.)

As a control piece, I advertised the same SEO product with the 67% theft rate. Knowing the recommendation came from me personally, there was only a low 14% theft rate.

Now 14% may not seem like a lot until I look at the big picture. What if I said I'm going to lose $14,000? Pretty significant loss huh?

Well, if I planned on earning $100,000 from promoting that SEO product over the course of a year, the $14,000 is what my theft rate would be. And that's from people who know me. Compare that $14,000 loss to the measly $100 it costs for the ClickMate script (including installation) and its true value becomes glaringly apparent.

Now what about that 67% theft rate from people who don't know me?

Lets look at an average $50 ebook paying out 50% commission. There's roughly $23 per unit sold in "available commission" after Clickbank fees.

If the SEO product was to sell 1,000 units per year, times $23 per sale, that's $23,000 in commission, of which $15,410 goes missing. It either gets stolen by nickname swapping, or by people joining the affiliate program just to get a "50% discount" on the product.

Now here's the real clincher, especially if you sell anything through Clickbank...

I know that about 35% of Revenge of the Mininet sales are direct sales, meaning that they don't come through affiliates. They come from my newsletter, search engines and other forms of advertising.

So of that $23,000 in "available commissions" we mentioned earlier, my direct sales account for $8,050 per year. But wait... if 67% commission gets stolen, by people signing up for the affiliate program just to get a 50% discount, I lose $5,394 per year. Something I could have prevented by installing the $100 ClickMate.

Given the numbers, does protecting your direct Clickbank sales make sense? Does spending 100 bucks to save over 5,000 make sense. Does spending 100 bucks to protect all your affiliate's commissions make sense? I hope you answered yes to all these questions.

In case you're still not convinced, here's a real case study. It's an email I received just last week, from a friend about a new SEO product. They're offering select "super affiliates" a 60% commission. A whopping $100 commission on every sale. I was invited to this party, but did I jump at the chance??? Here's what I said.

Hi (name),

Yes, I ran a couple of test ads for (pro SEO product) and should have got at least 20 sales but got only 2 or 3 that I recall. Trouble is he's using Clickbank and the hoplink is exposed. He is not using Adrian's ClickMate protection script.

(I have an article coming out based on a series of tests we did here. Turns out that average surfers buying quit smoking ebooks don't lift commission. Whereas nearly 70% of SEO related products get the commission stolen.)

So it sounds good on the surface, but in reality, its like he's giving you a 60% payout on nothing. I'd hate for you and I to do all the work of reviewing and promoting, only to get nothing in return. If anything (name) should use Adrian's script which - including installation - is under 100 bucks.

Not only will he get happy affiliates... here's the biggie. His direct sales will go way up. So in other words, if he's doing any of his own PPC advertising, newsletter promotions, or seo work, he'll get 67% more profit.

Gee, I don't know about you and I hate to use cliches... but that's a real no brainer. He'll make back the cost of the protection script in the first two sales and continue getting 67% more profit on direct sales forever more.

There's a quick lesson for you (name) in here too. I know you're selling your ebook through Clickbank and I wish you'd add this script. Adrian can do it in a couple of hours and a lot more "super" affiliates would be signing up to sell your stuff.

Here is the url to get ClickMate: ==> http://www.cdzn.com/ecm

Note that he uses his own script. He is selling through Clickbank but it doesn't display my hoplink. Through my htaccess file, it looks like I'm linking directly to his home page. In addition, you can't tell from the order link what HIS hoplink or nickname is. This makes it virtually impossible for casual commission theft, or to swap out nicknames just to get an "affiliate discount" on the purchase.

So not only does it give far more income to both merchant and the affiliate, the script has a lot of other benefits. It lets you know who your affiliates are, as they need to sign up through a special page. That way you can track all their activity and email them directly with rewards and incentives.

It allows you to sell multiple products from multiple sites without needing a separate Clickbank account for each. It protects your download page with a proof of purchase page. It boosts PR and link popularity of your sales page, by allowing direct linking...

I could go on and on about it, but as you can see, I'm totally happy with it, and have seen my direct sales income for Revenge go up a whopping 65% since switching my exposed Clickbank hoplinks over to Adrian's ClickMate system. It paid for itself in less than a day!

Michael

Oh, and in the beginning of this newsletter, remember how I told you about the ClickMate being a CGI script with a PHP database, blah, blah, blah, and how it gave me a headache? Well, the cost of the ClickMate is only $67, so if you like mucking with scripts... good on ya. For an extra $30 Adrian installs the script for you.

And the honest truth is, I've never met a more friendly and helpful person. He gave me a list of things he needed. After 10 minutes I emailed him back. A day later he emailed to say everything was done. All that was left for me to do, was change the links on my sales letter. How easy was that?

Now I have my affiliates protected from casual commission theft and I have a lot more income due to direct sales. What I put off for nearly a year, paid for itself in less than a day... DOH! This year I'm putting that five thousand dollars back into my own pocket. And my affiliates are going to make more.

Conclusion

So if someone approaches you and wants you to sell their pro level product through Clickbank with exposed hoplinks, tell them they have two choices.

1) Just say no. Tell them that without them - the vendor -  investing a mere 100 bucks to protect their affiliates and direct sales, they obviously don't know, or don't care. Simply refer them to this newsletter issue so they can clue in.

2) If they still don't get it, and you really want to promote their product, offer to buy the ClickMate script and have Adrian install it for them. Spend the 100 bucks to protect your affiliate link (and all the others)... Yes, I'm totally serious.

Depending on the amount of commission you receive, ClickMate could pay for itself in the first two sales. After that, you could be keeping up to 67% more of your commissions, now and forever after. And who among you doesn't want a 67% pay raise?
