NEWS, VIEWS AND CLUES
Google's PageRank Called Obsolete
There's a new kid (er, I mean search engine) on the block. This one is
tough enough and has the technology to topple the king pins. The new
service "become.com" is still in beta, but has some clear advantages
over traditional search engines.
It's split into two sections to help define the context of user
searches. It has organic crawler technology powered by their
proprietary "Affinity Index Ranking" (AIR) and a shopping mode fed by
data feeds.
When you type in "digital cameras" into a traditional search engine, it
has no way of knowing if you are shopping or researching. Become.com
addresses search context by allowing people to do their research, then
comparison shop for the purchase. It lets the users decide where they
are in the purchase funnel.
Cofounders Michael Yang and Yeogirl Yun, (the team that built mySimon
which sold for $700 million) explained, "Become's algorithm considers
inbound and outbound links but penalizes sites with links to, or from,
off-topic content. Google's PageRank on the other hand, considers only
the inbound links. Yun calls Google's PageRank, outdated."
(BTW, this is the same dude that also founded WiseNut, which was later
acquired by LookSmart. Something tells me, these guys have the
experience to pull this one off.)
The shopping search results are from XML feeds. So if your company has
them, you'd be wise to contact the people at Become while they're
looking for content. They plan on adding 2,000 affiliate and
merchant/vendor feeds by year end. Shopping.com, in comparison, has
just over 3,500 feeds.
If you want, you can even go to Become.com and try out the search
engine. And yes... those are Google AdSense ads running down the side.
For more information, you can read Rebecca Lieb's full article, "Who's
Shopping? Who's Researching?" here:

Super Affiliates are Easy!
My good friend Neil Shearing just updated his Internet Success Spider.
I had a chance to play with the software and watch the video. (Being a
Mac guy who never reads instructions, the new video was super helpful.)
The product looks really good, is easier to use, and is much faster
than previous versions in my opinion.
The Spider can search for potential affiliates (people who want to sell
your stuff) by keywords or links. It shows the Alexa rank and whois
(site owner) information for every site. (Important for contacting the
owner and knowing how "good" the affiliate really is.)
After testing it... yup! The results were clear. One run of the
software certainly shows who would be a potential linking partner and
reseller of my products. (That's because I was looking for more people
to sell my stuff based on my keywords, but it'll do the same for you.)
Gotta like it. The software runs on your desktop computer. You own it.
So there are no pesky yearly licensing fees like some software. But the
real gem in my opinion is the "first contact" manual that Neil put
together.
You know what? Even if you never use this software, but you're trying
to get my attention... this little ebook is priceless. I'm serious.
It's how Neil and I met... now we're friends :-)
He used his own system to contact me and get me interested in selling
his stuff... how cool is that? Then he wrote an ebook on how to attract
people like me with a single email. With over 100 emails arriving daily
- after filtering - it's no easy task I can assure you. ;-)
If you have a product and you're looking for affiliates, no... make
that "super" affiliates, look no further than the Internet Success
Spider. Not only will the software identify the best potential
affiliates, the ebook will charm them into becoming your sales people.
And what could be better than that?

PPC Sentinel Stops Click Fraud and Helps Get Your Money Back.
In an average market 30% of all PPC clicks are fake. In some
competitive keyword categories, it's higher than 50%. If you're ready
to make a stand against click fraud, then no one paying for clicks can
afford to be without the new PPC Sentinel.
For only fractions of a penny, it tracks every click to your PPC (pay
per click) ads. Doesn't matter if you use Google AdWords, Overture, old
fashioned banners, or anything in-between... it's got you protected.
When fraudulent activity is detected, an email alert is sent to you,
informing you of the attack. A warning message appears on the offending
perpetrators screen. A refund request form is automatically generated
and emailed to you, so you can forward the evidence to Google or
Overture, from a trusted 3rd party perspective and request a refund for
fraudulent clicks.
If you'd like to learn more about how it works, you can read the full
report here:

Fraud with Sentinel =>

Four Equalizers Promise to Level the Playing Field
Jeff Alderson never sleeps... or so it seems. You may know him from
such products as AdWords Analyzer, or Traffic Equalizer. Over the past
couple of months, he's created four new Equalizer products, all of
which help the busy marketer by automating tasks and creating
additional revenue streams.
The first one, "RSS Equalizer" has been out for a while, but most
people didn't have a clue how to use it. It's an RSS aggregator, which
is a fancy way of saying it's an RSS feed collector. It allows you to
subscribe to RSS feeds and have them continually update the content on
any page that you choose. Fresh content keeps the search engines... and
visitors happy.
RSS Equalizer
==> http://www.cdzn.com/req
The second one, CB Maximizer turns ads into website content that the
search engines can spider. It works by giving you constantly updated,
revenue generating content, using the Clickbank marketplace and a
unique technology, that embeds your affiliate codes into every single
ad on the page. Best of all... they don't look like, or say they're
ads... meaning they're more likely to be seen as content and get
clicked on.
CB Maximizer
==> http://www.cdzn.com/cbm
The third one, "Article Equalizer" provides related content for your
site, by allowing you to choose data sources and popular article
categories. Once the software locates and gathers the content, it
generates web pages and uploads them to your web site. It's like having
a continuous supply of quality targeted content at your fingertips. Now
what if you built dozens of individual niche sites and put AdSense ads
on every page? Hmm, one can only wonder.
Article Equalizer
==> http://www.cdzn.com/aeq
The fourth one "Competition Equalizer" promises to spy on your AdWords
competitor's top pulling ads and allow you to create your own ultimate
ad. It allows you to do product research into untapped markets, and
find keywords you might be missing out on by scouring through the
Google Sandbox. Then just paste this list into your Google AdWords
campaign, saving a massive amount of time.

To read more about the new Equalizer suite of products from an unbiased
and independent third party, I highly recommend Sherman Hu. You
can compare and decide which product(s) are right for you, based on the
advice of a marketing professional who uses tools like these on a daily
basis.

FAQs... YOU ASKED... I ANSWERED
Google "Crazy" to Ignore Nofollow Links
Q - I can understand
that Google would want to implement the nofollow tag to control blog
spam. However, I think that it's crazy to think that Google is going to
ignore these links for the purposes of RageRank determination.
Otherwise, all the link farms are just going to add the tags to their
links and then they won't be link farms any more? I don't think so.
I'll personally be sticking with the Dynamic Linking approach for any
outbound links on my pages. I'll be interested in your comments on this.
A - Well... to paraphrase Roy
H. Williams, "You have your choice of living in two worlds... the way
things aught to be... or the way things are." You may think it's
"crazy" but that's exactly what the nofollow tag was created to do...
prevent the spread of PR.
Though specifically intended for blogs, the search engines can't
necessarily tell a blog html page from a regular html page. Therefore,
the nofollow tag blocks PR and link popularity from getting passed
along, regardless of "where" they are being used.
And yes, if a link farm used nofollow in most of its outgoing links, it
might not be recognized as a link farm. (Of course if it has already
been banned as a link farm, using nofollow will not get it unbanned.)
But as far as your final assessment, Google gave us the nofollow tag
and can certainly take it away. It's not like it's been ratified by the
W3.org consortium or anything. They might just go... whoops, and
discontinue the tag tomorrow in favor of something else.
So I have to agree with you on the last point, and will continue to
recommend "proper" Dynamic Linking as explained by Leslie Rohde in his
ebook by the same name.

Click Fraud or Invasion of Privacy?
Q - I was blown away by
that fraud protection software you announced. So if I'm searching
around and click on your paid ad more than once in two hours, will get
a notice from you, saying that I am committing fraud, or am I put on
some "watch list" because of my activities?
Is that libellous action? Is this an invasion of my privacy? If you
insist on this monitoring you should tell people and they should have
an option to say no.
A - Well, everything you do
online is tracked and logged by your service provider. Not only that,
when you visit a site you are often cookied and accept a session ID.
These cookies track your habits and build a profile on you.
When you visit a web site, your browser gives a wealth of information
all about you. They know where you live, what kind of computer you
have, even how big your monitor is. Enough information to make
decisions regarding your affluence based on your neighborhood and age
of your computer.
And what about YOUR web site? Are you not logging, tracking and
monitoring everything I do there with your stats package? Am I given
the opportunity to say NO... I don't want you knowing HOW I found your
site or what I'm doing there?
If you use the internet... you ARE being monitored.
All the PPC Sentinel does is log
that stuff into a database. So yes, if you click on the same paid ad
more than once in a two hour period, it's given a point value. Not
enough to set off any alarms. It quickly fades away into a non event.
You can read the original bulletin that caused all the controversy here:
http://www.internetmarketingsecrets.com/news.html
If however, you were in a high risk country, you exhibited a pattern of
excessive paid ad clicking, and the IP address had already been flagged
as risky for previous activities... the system would alert me, so I
could pause that ad campaign before any more damage was done, and
request my money back from the ad network.
Oh, and not only that... you may have noticed cameras on every street
corner downtown. Cameras in the malls and the stores. There's a camera
in every ATM machine. There's cameras in the gas stations, and near the
cash register in almost every store.
Your credit card makes a log file that your bank will use to judge you.
Your bank ATM card leaves a permanent trail of everything you do and
everywhere you use it. So does your cell phone, your home phone, your
cablevision company, courier companies, the post office, the list goes
on.
Sorry if you feel that way but... as a digital society, our privacy was
invaded a long time ago, and it's showing no signs of letting up. If
you don't want to be monitored, don't use the internet, or your cell
phone, or your bank cards, or even go outside for that matter.
Sorry but like it or not... that's the monitored world we live in. I'm
not saying it's the way things aught to be... it's just the way they
are.
Is There Help For Non-Technical
Beginners?
Q - Hi Michael - I am
reading Nothing But
Net - but I am a totally non-technical beginner! Do you still
suggest starting with the TNT guide to set up my own website, or is
there a better beginner's guide to setting up a website, then moving on
to the TNT guide to beef it up with the search engines.
I understand you are very busy, but I would be honored to get your
opinion. PS: I think your book (Nothing But 'Net) might just make me
rich!!! It's very well written and I can't wait to put all the info to
use!
A - Thank you for the kind
words. I'm glad you are enjoying Nothing but 'Net and hope you can put
it to good use.
For totally non-technical beginners, at this time, I'm recommending the
new training videos by Jim Edwards, called the Mini Site Creator Course. Sometimes
it's hard to learn from an ebook, especially the more technical things,
like linking web pages to each other, dropping in graphics and loading
everything up to the server.
It's really helpful to watch the processes taking place. Being able to
pause the video, do it yourself, and then resume the video once the
task is accomplished. When it comes to the human brain learning new
motor skills, like those which involve the computer, there's nothing
better than, hearing, seeing and then doing. And being able to repeat
the process if you "don't get it" the first time, and go at your own
pace.
Click to the Minisite Course
==> http://www.cdzn.com/msc
Yes, then once your sites are up and running, and you want to "beef
them up" for the search engines. The TNT Guide would be a good choice
as it's very inexpensive and covers 90% of what you need to know. That
90% will give you a big advantage over your competition, since most
people don't make any effort at all, to optimize their sites for the
search engines, thinking it's way too much work.
But I have to disagree. If you do the SEO basics, they're not hard to
do, and don't take a lot of time. Then when the search engines change
their monthly algorithms, you needn't worry, as you have all the
fundamental cornerstones in place. Your competition - on the other hand
- may fluctuate wildly in the SERPs (search engine results pages)
because they haven't applied these few simple rules to their pages.
Totally Non-Technical (TNT) Guide ==> http://www.cdzn.com/tnt
Are Blog Links Invalid Due to Nofollow
Tag?
Q - Based on your
recommendation, I bought Rick Butts' Blog and Ping video. Being an SEO,
I was extremely pessimistic. I applied the strategy to my brand new
site, and within a few days Googlebot and MSNbot had come a knockin'.
But in light of the new "nofollow" tag, won't the benefit of having a
blog link go away?
A - Yep, same thing happened to
me when I did my first blog and ping. All major search engines came and
spidered my site within 48 hours. I've never seen anything like it.
How-To Blog & Ping Videos
==> http://www.cdzn.com/rbv
The benefit of blog links going away??? Oh heavens no... the benefit of
having blogs link to your site is still there. Big time!
The new nofollow tag applies to people posting comments to blogs "other
than" their own. The creator or author of the blog can put in as many -
PR building - links as they want into their headlines and text.
Starting a blog is fun, easy and free. It's one of the best ways to get
incoming links. And while you're at it, don't forget to "optimize" your
blog postings for searches, by putting relevant keywords in your Title,
Abstract, and a single keyword in the filename.html.
And here's a BIG tip... Take a look at your log
files. If you find any new pages linking to your site, help them - and
you - out by pinging those pages using the ping command exactly how
Rick shows you, in the Blog and Ping
Videos.
The search engines will
spider the "pinged" pages quickly and find the links to your site,
without having to "discover" them on their own. That way, your site
will benefit from any additional link popularity and PR from those new
links in the very next update.
Cool eh? Ping
your linking buddies for higher and faster search engine rankings
:-)
NOTES FROM YOU
I bought "Clickin' it
Rich" a little over a month ago. Actually, I was a bit skeptical,
because I thought there may not be much new information in there that I
had not seen elsewhere. Boy, was I wrong!
I implemented some of your common-sense ideas on just one of my sites.
As a result, over the past month, the increased affiliate commissions
have paid for your book almost 12 times over.
- Sanjeev
Mininets and dynamic linking in
one form or another, have been responsible for an explosion in my
online revenue. It's really how I thought about site building, cross
linking, and monetization, but it was your ebook that put me over the
edge and synthesized that for me.
- Dave T.
I purchased "Clickin' It Rich"
almost 3 years ago, and still think it's one of the best, most useful
ecommerce ebooks I've ever read.
- Mike Patrick
I get more and more people asking how I "did it" as my web properties
become more successful. My stock answer is to buy every ebook Michael Campbell is selling,
subscribe to his newsletter,
buy an html editor and a copy of Optilink.
Give it a year and tell your boss to kiss your ass.
Thought you might appreciate. Thanks for your writings and your helpful
spirit.
