NEWS, VIEWS AND CLUES

NicheBOT Keyword Research Tool Adds More Features

That lovable free keyword research tool just keeps getting better. Type in a keyword and it fetches results from Overture's search tool and then tells you how often they've been searched on Google and how many competing pages there are.

(Tip: If you use Firefox instead of Explorer as your browser, you get results much faster. Explorer likes to load a whole web page before it displays. Firefox shows pages as they are being loaded. Better browser = faster results.)

In addition, there's the thesaurus, lateralus, and the analysis, which shows Google's 15 top ranked sites along with their backlink count, number of pages indexed (saturation), and PageRank.

Some tools cost over $100 and do the same thing. NicheBOT is still free, and just keeps getting better all the time. Just try and see if you can avoid using it 10 times per day ;-)

FAQs... YOU ASKED... I ANSWERED

How to Make Landing Pages for PPC Ads

Q -
Quick question about Google landing pages. Do you have a preferred set of dimensions for landing pages that you use, or do you let them resize to whatever the browser displays?

A - (First a little background... a landing page is usually a single web page, that goes in-between your paid ad on Google and the final destination where the purchase is made. Usually the affiliate is trying to pre-sell the visitor, get their email address, a sign up, or some other course of action.)

With landing pages, my starting point is to put my text in a table that’s 600 pixels. I use a Verdana font and try to keep my line lengths between 60 to 80 characters, with short sentences of eight words or less, with no more than three sentences per paragraph.

I try to put as much important information “above the fold” as possible. (That means without the reader having to use the mouse to scroll down the page.) That includes at least one link (usually in the opening headline) and a graphic of the product I’m trying to sell.

I also test the background color. I found higher clickthrough ratios when I used yellow for music pages, grey for computer pages, sky blue for TVs and aqua for insurance. In almost all instances, having a photo or graphic of the item being searched increased clickthrough rates and sales.

The exception was on the insurance sign up page, where clicks went up with no graphic present. The text was centered on an aqua background, with no info below the fold.

Yep, it all boils down the one thing marketers know they should be doing, but nearly all of them fail to do... brush and floss after every meal. ;-) No just kidding! It's test and track.

Change nothing but the background color of the landing page. Then wait a few days and check the results. Repeat the process until you're happy with the clickthrough rate.

Finally, when writing content for your landing pages, remember that you are trying to convince someone to click on your affiliate link. Everything you write should work toward that goal. Transfer your confidence to the reader.

You can even leave out the features entirely and focus solely on the benefits. Tell the person the end result they will get... things like popularity, happiness, a relaxing time, saved time, more money, a more successful career, etc.

And don't forget, you can find a full discussion on emotional writing, in the Clickin' it Rich course, for the guitar site, the big screen TV site and the life insurance site.

Blogging is Easier Than Making Web Pages

Q -
Hello Michael, hopefully I can meet you in person one day. Quick question. Would you suggest buying this book (RSS Made Easy). It looks great. Just wanted to get your opinion. I really wanted to learn step by step about RSS and try it out. Will appreciate your advice.

A - Yes, the RSS Made Easy ebook helps a lot. It got me blogging, which I had been putting off for the longest time. Turns out that it's super easy to do - way easier than making web pages I might add - and doesn't involve much of a learning curve. It's easy to have a blog up and running in about 15 minutes.

The ebook also covers RSS feeds in great detail. But what's really cool, is that most blogging software automatically creates the interlinked web pages and an RSS feed for you. Which means that you can syndicate your RSS feed at the push of a button, and anyone can subscribe to it using their RSS Reader of choice.

I logged into my free "My Yahoo!" account, clicked on international content, and was able to find and subscribe to the RSS feed from my own blog. It's fun posting my blog content to my server and having it appear automatically on Yahoo.

I then set up a free account on MY MSN and did the same thing. How cool is that? Now anyone using Yahoo, or MSN - or any RSS Reader for that matter - can subscribe to the RSS feed that originates from my blog.

Although having RSS content appear automatically on your personal Yahoo and MSN pages is easy, having it appear automatically on your own web site is a little trickier and requires you to install a software script... an RSS aggregator... which is a just a fancy way to say an RSS feed collector / web site updater.

Adrian includes a free aggregator script with the RSS Made Easy ebook and tells you how to install it. He also goes into the pros and cons of several commercially available RSS Aggregators.

It's the aggregator that allows you to subscribe to RSS feeds and have them continually update the content on any web pages that you choose. Fresh content keeps the search engines happy, your visitors happy, and best of all, you can post info in one place - your blog - and have it automatically update the home pages of all your web sites. How cool is that?

Click Sentinel Stops Click Fraud and Helps Get Money Back

Click Sentinel protects your ppc clicks.In an average market 30% of all PPC clicks are fake. In some competitive keyword categories, it’s higher than 50%. If you’re ready to make a stand against click fraud, then no one paying for clicks can afford to be without the new PPC Sentinel. Works with Google, Overture, or old fashioned banners.

RSS Lets You Publish Once and Update Many Sites Instantly

Q -
I got the RSS Made Easy, it looks simple enough, but I might need hire you to help me figure out how to use it effectively. Can I book some coaching time with you?

A - Yeesh! Don't hire me... save your money. I'm too expensive ;-) Since you don't say "exactly" what you need help with...

If you need help setting up a Blog you can always get the Blog & Ping videos. Rick shows exactly what to do, so just follow his mouse clicks. The blog also generates your RSS feed for you.

Blog & Ping Videos ==> http://www.cdzn.com/rbv

If you need help with the RSS aggregator half, Adrian has instructions included with his RSS Made Easy ebook. He will even install the software for you, for a modest fee.

Or if you choose to buy a customizable aggregator like RSS Equalizer, it has step by step instructions, with screen shots showing exactly how to set it up on your site.

RSS Equalizer ==> http://www.cdzn.com/req

You can also read Sherman Hu's third party review on the Equalizer:

Sherman's Review ==> http://www.shermanhu.com/software-reviews/

As for using it effectively... that's really up to you. Off the top of my head, let's say you do SEO work for clients in the hotel industry.

If you have travel related news, car rental specials, savings coupons, offers from third parties, or news from the corporate office, you can post them on your blog, and then have all your client sites update automatically, with content that YOU control. If you blog every day, the search engines come back every day. It's like feeding a pet (search engine) spider.

Bottom line, the most effective use of blogs and RSS feeds in my opinion... especially if you have related clients is... publish once, have content updated on many sites... automagically.

How to Monetize Blogs and RSS Feeds

Q -
I got the RSS Equalizer based on your recommendation and installed it on my site. I like how I can choose which content I want to appear. But I'm afraid of traffic leaving my site. I can't figure out how to monetize the traffic that might leave. Can you help?

A - Ah yes my son, lean a little closer and I'll whisper it in your ear. Don't take a whole whack of RSS feeds from strangers... make them all your own. He he he :-)

Set up say... five different blogs and post to them several times per week. Use RSS Equalizer to subscribe to those feeds. Since you own and create content for the feeds. Seed the content with affiliate links that are in context with your content. Cool eh?

Now it looks as though your sites are getting fresh content daily... and they are, from several different RSS feeds coming from blogs that you own. It's just that you are creating all that content and have complete control over which links, offers and stories that appear.

(And if you ever run out of things to say, try using press releases. Many companies encourage you to use their content. All you "usually" need to do, is give credit to the press release source like this... Source: prweb.com.)

Blog and Tap the RSS Feed

Q -
Hey Mike, I've been reading your stuff for years. Heard through the grapevine you started blogging. Good on ya! So spill it already. What is the url for your blog man? I'd really dig it if you had an RSS feed I could tap into.

A - Wow... news travels fast. Fast as an RSS feed I might add ;-)

Yes, I started blogging but held off mentioning it until I had "seeded" it with enough content to be considered "worthy" of an announcement.

You can pick up the Internet Marketing Secrets RSS feed and read the blog whenever you want, in your choice of RSS Readers. Just paste this feed url into your favorite Reader software: http://homepage.mac.com/dmcorp/rss.xml

You'll find the same content as the newsletter and many articles that I've written. There's also additional FAQs posted there, as I can't possibly put every question I answer into the limited space of this newsletter.

So if you want to subscribe with an RSS aggregator and have my content appear on your site automatically, I'll be breaking this newsletter and other writing into small chunks, and try to post every couple of days. That way, you get fresh content almost daily, from yours truly :-)

Or if you prefer, you can always read my blog as good old fashioned html pages. You can link to the Internet Marketing Secrets blog here: http://homepage.mac.com/dmcorp/index.html

Which is Better... SEO or PPC?

Q - I noticed your recommendation of Jim Edwards' Mini Site Creator. I'm concerned how one page sites will rank, since most sites in the top 10 seem to have far more content.

Perhaps when someone has read TNT Guide they can achieve some results, but I'm somewhat skeptical. Wouldn't it be better to recommend Andy Williams SEO Website Builder for non-technical beginners?

A - After you do your keyword research and analyze the competition. There are two main schools of thought... or traffic. Pay per click (PPC) traffic and organic free search engine optimization (SEO) listings.

Dr. Andy's SEO Website Builder, the TNT Guide, Andy and Brad's Stomping the Search Engines, my Revenge of the Mininet, etc, are all SEO related.

My Fast Track in the Clickin' it Rich Action Plan, John Reese's Traffic Secrets, Jim Edwards' Mini Site Creator, Perry Marshall's Definitive Guide to Google AdWords are all PPC related.

(You can find links to all of those products from my web site http://www.cdzn.com )

To "rank well" with SEO, you generally need a five to ten page site, or in more competitive keyword categories, a Mininet, (which some people are now calling virtual real estate), as described in Revenge of the Mininet. To "rank well" for PPC, especially on Google AdWords, you just need to know how to write a good ad.

Mini Site Creator CourseThe reason that Jim's Mini Site Creator is perfect for beginners, is because it has videos that assume you know nothing about making a web page. This is as basic as it gets.

Jim also wants to get you earning some money quickly, by focusing on PPC ads, which bring immediate, consistent, predictable traffic. Compare that to the three months it may take to start getting SEO traffic.

With the changes to Google's AdWords system, where the days of the "Google Cash" method, linking directly to the affiliate site are long gone, the one page site, or value added "landing page" has become the new status quo. (There are several examples of profitable landing pages in the Action Plan.)

Unlike Overture, where it's simply a bidding war, ranking in the top 10 on Google is a matter of bid price AND writing the best classified ads. The more clicks you get, the less you pay per click.

Yes, I know that sounds odd, the more you get clicked on the less you pay, but Perry Marshall's course tells you exactly how to write ads that perform better than the competition. I bought the course about a month ago and have been listening to the 10 hours of audio every day since.

Perry Marshall's Course ==> http://www.cdzn.com/pmg

Some people don't even bother with traditional SEO traffic any more. Instead, their business models are based entirely on pay for clicks, constantly tracking and testing new ideas in the sales process, (PPC ad, landing page, opt-in page, sales letter, follow-up autoresponders, back-end sales) and by doing so, making a lot more money in profits, than they spend in advertising.

Either road (PPC or SEO) takes time to learn. For raw beginners, the enthusiasm of that first sale from PPC ads, can go a long way to keeping them inspired. So don't get me wrong, I love Dr. Andy's software, I use it and recommend it myself, but it can take longer to get results.

I want the beginner to get hooked on the excitement through immediate PPC traffic, then, if they want to take it beyond the Fast Track and up to the next level, use Dr. Andy's SEO Website Builder software and the TNT Guide, where we start building sites for better positioning and free search engine traffic.

Then finally, if the student chooses to make the internet a career choice, I've provided tons of bonus material in Clickin' it Rich with the Keyword Hotlist, 25 Top Markets, the Career Building Plan, Quick and Easy eBook Publishing, How to Write and Sustain a Profitable Newsletter and the audio, to help them set up a complete home business, with minimal risk.

But it all starts with that burst of joy from the very first internet sale. The sooner we can make that happen, the more likely it is that we'll reach their heart, and show their mind the infinite possibilities that lie ahead.

If You Want to Keep Writing this Newsletter...

Q -
I am writing you to tell you that I appreciate your news letters. I also like your books. I have them all!

I made some purchases but I didn't use your links. Instead, I noted that you were the one who encouraged me to make the purchases. I am going to tell you what I bought so that you can make sure you get your commissions. (A list of five items followed.)

A - Well, that's a nice thought, but unfortunately things don't work that way. Unless you purchase through my links, there is no way for me to go back and prove it to the vendors. Nor is it appropriate to take away the commission from someone else.

If you want to encourage me to keep writing and thank me for the endless hours it takes to write ebooks, do research, run experiments, provide courses, make training materials, review products, and write this newsletter, you can make your purchases through my web site at http://www.cdzn.com, or by using the links provided here in this newsletter, or from the links in the ebooks.

But thanks for reading my ebooks and appreciating them anyways. I hope you can put them to good use.

Money Making or Career Building... Which Path will You Choose?

Q -
You're one of the very few people online that I trust and that writes without all that breathless hype. Here's my question: I would love to be able to work from home and have an online business as my source of income.

My problem is that all my interests are not commercial (philosophy, literature, politics). I'm a bookworm, not a businessman. I don't want to dedicate the research time or get involved with content on matters that don't interest me.

I've just about concluded that it's the lifestyle that interests me, but not what it actually takes to get it - namely an interest in some field that is monetizable. Is there anything left in the online realm that I could do?

Can't one just sell physical products and make a living, without having to have a "passion" for it, and without having to spend 10 hours a day at it, or at keeping up with the latest thing in marketing? If you could suggest something - and the corresponding resources to become competent at it - I'd be deeply grateful.

A - I think that with your interest in philosophy and politics, you might be interested in blogging. Setting up a blog over at blogger.com is fast, free and easy. Or for Apple users - like me -  just use iBlog and your .mac account to be posting in five minutes or less.

If you follow current events, it's easy to pick up on controversial topics and write about them in your blog. Once you have a few postings, start announcing your blog to the rest of the world, and encourage visitors to leave their comments.

The easiest way to start blogging is with Adrian Ling's RSS Made Easy, or if you prefer learning from videos, there's Rick Butt's Blog and Ping series. (I have both of them.)

Although there is a little overlap, I bought the videos and watched them first. They show how to set up a blog in minutes. Adrian's text explains how to blog, but also includes how to add RSS feeds to your site so it updates constantly with fresh content.

RSS Made Easy ==> http://www.cdzn.com/rme

Blog & Ping ==> http://www.cdzn.com/rbv

Few topics spark as much emotion as people passionate about politics. With passion comes a lot of traffic and within three months a high Google PR, which means pretty much anything you link to will get traffic.

So if you are talking about politics, I'm certain you can find several affiliate programs, where your readers can buy paraphernalia for their favorite, or most disliked politician. Just aim your high PR blog links to your product landing pages.

In addition, as a self confessed book worm, why not do book reviews and post them on your blog. You could also post your reviews at third party sites like Amazon.

Ok, all that said, the final answer is yes. You can sell physical goods over the internet, without having a passion for what you do.

If it's the lifestyle that attracts you, the Clickin' it Rich Action Plan has a Fast Track that has you promoting products though affiliate programs, much like having a job. The only difference is, the type of job means you're working from home and setting your own hours.

In the course we examine three of my web properties. They are three one page minisites dealing with guitars, big screen TVs and life insurance. I'm not passionate about any of those things, but all three pages make money.

In the Fast Track, how much money you make will depend on two things. 1) How good you are at writing the ads that get displayed on Google and Overture. 2) How good you are at persuading someone to click the affiliate links, on your landing page.

For writing the ads, I recommend Perry Marshall's Definitive Guide to Google AdWords. Not only do you get several how-to ebooks, there's like 10 hours of audio. This "must have" information makes the difference between successful ad campaigns or losing money.

Google AdWords Course ==> http://www.cdzn.com/pmg

For writing in an emotional manner, focusing solely on benefits rather than features. The main Clickin' it Rich text covers that in great detail.

Clickin' it Rich ==> http://www.cdzn.com/cir

Personally, I prefer building an online business following the Career Track of the Action Plan. One where you get the asset, the name and email address of the customer. A business model where you follow-up and have a lasting relationship through newsletters, ebooks, articles and other content.

But it's not for everyone. For most people, following the Fast Track, setting up Google Ads that lead to landing pages, convincing people to click, is as far as they want to go. Sometimes I wish I had chosen the "anonymous" path, but with the publishing of my first book back in the Summer of '99, this "reluctant guru" had to take the stage.

So in the end, if you like the lifestyle, but don't want to dedicate time to matters that don't interest you. Just follow the Fast Track in the Action Plan, along with Perry's Google Ad Guide, and you should be enjoying the lifestyle, without having to make it a focal point in your life. You can use it simply as a vehicle to make money.

Then once you are financially free, spend your quality time posting politics, philosophy and book reviews to your blog and enjoying the discussions fueled by your passions.

So let me ask you... which path will you choose? The Fast Track to making money, or the slower but more lucrative Career Building track? Get them both in the Action Plan.
