Breaking Internet Marketing News
Just a heads up that
this newsletter might be a little more sporadic than usual until the
end of the year. I'm moving and my house has been sold. Unfortunately,
the new place won't be ready until mid December. So I'll be living out
of a suitcase in a hotel for a month.
So between packing and moving out. Fiscal year end. Living in a hotel
for a month. Then moving again, unpacking, getting everything
reconnected... I'll try my best to keep answering your questions and
the newsletter coming, but the next "regular" version might not be
ready for at least a month.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank you (cheers and
applause ;-) for continuing to read this newsletter. It's really yours
and I write it for you, so please keep sending in your questions. I'll
pick the good ones and answer them for you here... and in my new
podcast, which I'll talk about in a moment.
In addition, there's plenty of new things I'm working on, and I hope to
have them ready for you very soon. First - hopefully before Christmas -
will be Michael's Advertising Club or M-A-C for short.
Members of the club will enjoy professionally written ad copy, that's
ready to copy and paste. The ads can be used in newsletters, landing
pages, web pages, however you want. You can also modify the ads any way
that you want. You own 'em.
To keep the club exclusive and to prevent overuse of the ads, the club
will be open to just 1% of my readers on a first come first served
basis. I'll keep everyone posted in the next edition of this newsletter.
Then, once I get settled in my new home, I'll finally have enough room
to set up my recording studio once again. (Long time readers will
remember back to 2001 when I first did audio FAQs using MP3, years
before the term "podcast" was even invented. ;-)
The plan is to produce a weekly podcast to answer your internet
marketing FAQs on any topic. So if you have anything you want answered,
send it to askmichael at mac.com (replace the at with @) and I'll start
the new year with your questions.
Ok, enough about me. This newsletter is supposed to be about you. So
let's get on with the show shall we? :-)
Google Index Update
Ravages SEO Waters
As you may have noticed, Google is playing with its algorithm once
again. Seems like late October is the time they really like to shake up
the rankings, just in time for the Christmas buying season.
According to Jerry West, the current update - which you've probably
heard is code named Jagger - is currently completing its second phase
with a third adjustment on the way. Speculation, accusations and
reverberations are flying everywhere.
My advice - as always - is don't panic until the update is over and the
index stabilized. Then if you have been nuked and you rely on search
engine traffic, you better get good at PPC ads in a hurry.

Those who followed Jerry West's advice on "how to get out and stay out
of the Google Sandbox" weathered the storm just fine. Early indications
show not only did my test sites and mininets escape the wrath of
Jagger, but positioning and PageRank actually increased across the
board. Thank you Jerry!
Most heavily purged appeared to be those sites buying run of site
linking (which Jerry has been warning about for six months) and those
people hiding text in their CSS style sheets.
So as you can see, your positioning in the SERPs can often be
accredited to whose advice you follow. So next time there's a storm
coming, would you rather sink like a rock or bob like a cork?

New Hand Held Video Revolution
In case you missed the announcements or commercials, Apple's latest
iPod plays video. Not just stills and photos which it could do before,
but full motion 30 fps video.
In addition to the iPod, they also introduced a new version of iTunes
for OSX and Windows operating systems. Now you can buy and download
music videos, short films, even popular TV shows the day after they
broadcast on network television.
This opens a new segment in the market. One where you can time-shift
video as well as audio.
Think about that for a second. You load the iPod up with purchased
video and watch the small screen on the bus, while on the treadmill and
during lunch.
You can also load up your own "home made" video clips and take them
with you. Just plug the video output from the iPod into any TV, and
watch your home made action on the big screen.
Now that computers and the internet have finally caught up - with AAC
audio and H.264 world standard for video - we marketers can get busy
creating new products for our customers to enjoy. Not to mention it
makes it a lot easier to annoy friends with those home made movies ;-)
Podcasting has become pretty much main stream. And if you're still
wondering what it is... don't worry about it. It's simply subscribing
to an audio (or video) program, but instead of listening live, you are
notified when a new program is available, so you can download it and
enjoy it whenever you want.
Just wait and see... year 2006 will finally be the year of the podcast.
Thanks to advances in technology and high speed internet, our
self-directed education and entertainment just got a whole lot better.
If you want to get started, or see what all the fuss is about, just go to Apple and download the latest iTunes
software. It won't cost you anything. Once it's installed, launch
the software and Click on Podcasts in the Source pane and subscribe to
whatever you like.
While you're at it, you can also use iTunes to preview music and video,
create and listen to song libraries, burn CDs and listen to radio
stations from around the world.
Best of all, along with its buddy QuickTime Pro, you can encode or
convert all your audio files into MP3 or AAC format, and export all
your video into the new standard H.264 format.
Quick Market Research for AdSense
Publishers
Using the new Online Gold Finder makes AdSense market research easy.
Launch the software, specify how many searches per month, plus the
minimum and maximum cost per click. Then press the button and it brings
back a list of all the keywords and keyphrases that match your request.
In other words, you don't need to know where the markets are. The
Online Gold Finder will tell you. In just a few seconds, you'll know
what people are searching for and how much the advertisers are paying.
Then once you have this info, you can set up affiliate revenue sites,
or plug the keywords into your main keyword harvesting / scraping tool
to build portals.
So if you want instant market research without having to do the work,
then this software might just be perfect for you. And yes, it works
equally well for both niche site marketers and portal revenue models.

Total Niche Market Domination Released
It's
official. The Total Niche Market Domination (TNMD) Report by Jim Morris
is now publicly available. You can tell all your friends about it and
they can download it for free.
If you're not into building mininets or portals, and you just want to
have one high quality content site, then TNMD is the best solution for
top "organic" listings in the SERPs (search engine results pages).
By setting it up like a week long course, where you only do a little
bit every day, it's easy to build momentum and literally dominate any
niche that you choose.
If Jim - a self proclaimed search engine dummy - can do it, so can you.
He'll show you in the free report how to get linking partners, how to
control what the incoming links say, automate the linking process,
automate building a directory, and get high quality linking partners 50
to 100 times faster than doing it manually.

Buy Low & Sell High for Passive
Income
Looking for another passive income stream? Here's way to use Rick
Butts' Keyword Burner and tools like it.
Just type a keyword in the Burner and it shows you AdWords advertising
bids from the most expensive click down to the least. It literally lays
out the dynamic range in any theme or niche market, so you can buy low
and sell high.
How? Simply bid your PPC on the low paying click phrases. Then send
that click to your landing pages, optimized for high paying click
phrases.
In other words, why pay over 50 dollars a click for "life insurance
quotes" when you can bring them to your site at 50 cents a click for
"life insurance needs analysis." Then on your "needs analysis" pages,
create an affiliate / AdSense exit strategy for that traffic based on
the high paying "insurance quote" related phrases.
Sheesh, I know it doesn't take a wizard to figure that one out, but why
are so few people - besides me - doing it? (Right now you might be
having one of those moments.) DOH! Now why didn't I think of that ;-)
The real trick is to optimize your "on-page" factors so that AdSense
"thinks" your "insurance needs" page is about "insurance quotes" so it
automatically places the "correct" high paying phrases on your page.
All it takes is a little tweaking of the headline and text. Buy low
PPC... publish high.

Internet Marketing FAQs, Secrets and Strategies
Should You Link to Lesser Linking Partners
Q - I
have a couple of sites with PR5s and keep getting link requests from
PR2 and PR3 sites. Is it worth my while to link back to these "lesser"
quality sites?
A - Yes,
I think you should link your PR5 pages to your PR3 linking partners.
The reason why is a little sneaky. Here's an excellent tip - used with
permission - from SEO expert Jerry West.
We all know that pages create PR and links distribute it. But what
research seems to show, is that only PR4s and above actually "spread"
PR. Like filling up a reservoir and finally spilling over the
floodgate, PR4s are the beginning of the flow. So what you want to do,
is create a PR feedback loop.
Link your PR5 page to no more than four PR3 linking partner pages. That
will - more than likely - bump them up to PR4s, which will now pass
PageRank back to your page, feeding your PR5 with sweet PR4 juice,
which will probably make you a PR6.
By linking your high PR pages to "lesser" linking partners in the PR3
range, you can only benefit by creating a feedback loop in which the PR
is returned, to boost your PageRank even higher. Jerry tells me he has
tested this for his clients... and it works.

Power RSS Automates Your Website
Content
This is totally different. It's not a blog. It's a whole new generation
of RSS tools that creates static HTML web pages on any web sites that
you manage. Pages that the search engines love to spider and humans
love to visit.
Plus, it automatically generates and archives one page per day, slowly
building your site. It works with your existing web site content,
includes AdSense ads, and it comes with an easy to use RSS aggregator,
so you can always have fresh news on any page that you choose.

New Laptop Computer
Means Freedom
Q - I've bought some of
the products you've recommended in the past, but I'm having trouble
viewing some videos and listening to audio on my Windows 98 laptop. Is
there a dial-up version of these products available?
A - The '98 in Windows 98
refers to the year the operating system came out. As we swing into
2006, that means your operating system is eight years old... your
computer may be even older.
The computer is a tool and as such needs to be updated on a regular
basis. Even Microsoft quietly stopped supporting '98. They are no
longer creating updates or patches for it.
Think of it this way. Computers and the internet age in dog years. That
means seven years for every one human year. In those terms, your
computer is at least 56 years old.
Even the federal government allows you to depreciate a computer 10% in
the first year and 33% per year after. So even the government is saying
that a computer is essentially worthless after about four years.
My advice is to donate your old laptop to charity - if they'll even
take it ;-) and get yourself a new one, the best you can afford at the
time. It will reward you with years of service. And you'll be able to
play - and record - all the latest DVDs, CDs and audio files.
And as for dial-up, don't use it unless you have to. High speed
internet is one of the most important productivity enhancers you can
get. If you're serious about running a business online, you NEED high
speed internet access.
Better yet, make sure your new laptop has built-in wireless 802.11g.
(Not the much slower and older 802.11b.) Then you can work just about
anywhere you want, including any room in your house, in hotels, at the
airport, and at your favorite coffee shop.
Get a new laptop. Get high speed internet. Get wireless. And you'll
have total freedom from the cubical, to work and play how you want,
where you want.
Buying Links - Like Fine Wines - Need
Aging
Q - Let's say you build
content sites in different niches and you have an opportunity to buy
100 PR5 links... how would you take advantage of that opportunity for
the highest ROI?
My thought is to point them to a network of sites (perhaps 3-5 blogs)
which I would link to my content sites, to drive PageRank and get new
any sites spidered in no time. What do you reckon mate?
A - Personally I wouldn't buy
links, its too dangerous. It would be very easy for any search engine
to penalize both the advertiser and the publisher. If you want to spend
money on links, you're better off getting high PR ones from the
directories. At least those sites are "supposed" to be selling links.
But... if I did buy 100 incoming PR5 links, I'd do so very slowly so it
didn't look like an artificial or "machine made" reciprocal linking
strategy. I'd also include a "topic and page drift" of at least 30% in
the incoming links... meaning they don't all say the same thing or link
to the same page. It's important to mix in synonymous words and link to
the internal pages as well.
Yes, you could send the purchased links to your blogs, then from your
blogs, link out to any new websites you create. (Which may be helpful
if you need "additional steps" to throw off the "scent of
proprietorship.")
But the greatest benefit would come by linking the PR5 pages directly
to your new sites. Being PR5, they should have spiders following any
new links within three days. But if you add the extra step of detouring
through the blogs... all bets are off.
Why? Because it generally takes three months of "aging" for the PR
value to spread. So if you bought the links, they'd have to stay up for
at least three months to get the full value. Then once the PR has
passed on to your blogs, you could use them to direct PR to any web
properties you choose.
And hey... if you decide against it, and come to the conclusion that
buying links is not for you, just download a free copy of Jim Morris'
Total Niche Market Domination. He'll shows you the fastest way to get
linking partners, and automate the entire process. And yes... it's free.

Simply join up and start using their keyword research to tap into hot

Yes, these guys really do make over $20,000 U.S. per month. But the

How to Avoid Words that
Click Off Your Readers
Q - I've got just one
question. You wrote, "Don't use tired selling phrases that everyone
else is using. They don't work anymore. Words and phrases like;
skyrocket, through the roof, ground breaking, powerful, reveal,
exposed, fortune, profit, etc."
I m wondering whether this statement really holds true. I've seen many
marketers including (big list of names was here), who are creating
salescopy "products" which are based around these phrases. Some of them
have even compiled the so-called juicy "skyrocketing" words into ebooks
and sell them off the internet. What say you Mike?
A - The reason you are told to
use those phrases is because they used to work in the late 50's and
early 1960's in direct response marketing pieces that were sent by
mail. They have largely been replaced by infomercials, shopping
channels and the internet.
Yep, a whole generation of suckers got hyped into buying things they
really didn't need. And that's why direct response marketers have such
a bad rap.
Most stuff sold by direct response - directly between the customer and
advertiser - ends up in the trash because either the product is low
quality, or the buyer really didn't need it anyways. They were just
temporarily weak willed, desperate for a solution, got caught up in a
moment and were persuaded by a slick sales pitch.
As for the list of names of marketers you sent me... Hate to say it,
but most of them are juniors with no formal training in marketing. All
they are doing is copy and pasting the words of a famous marketer, who
always had a famous ghost writer writing his copy for him.
So most of the marketers write the way they do because they heard it
from a guy, who heard it from a guy, who never actually wrote his own
stuff, but hired a guy, who read a book in the 1950's that said, here
is how you can skyrocket your sales in direct response advertising.
In fact, just this week alone, I received no less than a dozen email
communications promising to skyrocket my sales, my business, and just
about everything else. None of them got read past the first paragraph.
Hello... earth to copywriters... your customers are not morons and
promising to "skyrocket" anything is like telling them to click off,
tune out and get lost.
So what can you do about intelligent buyers and how should you write
for today's discerning audience? Well, you'll have to wait about a
month.
In the next edition of this newsletter, look for a special report on
the health of advertising and some specific remedies for getting smart,
educated, well connected people to buy your products. Not only that,
for those of you wanting professional ad copy that's ready to use, I
hope to have my advertising club ready to go by then as well.
That's it for now... the next time you hear from me I'll be living in a
hotel for a month, anxiously awaiting my new home. Wish me luck.
