In this issue: Podcasting is Fun, Fast, Easy... and Profitable?

Thanks to Apple's iTunes for WINDOWS and QuickTime for WINDOWS, it's easy for anyone - with a microphone and something to say - to start podcasting and bring their message to the masses.

Not only are podcasts easy to create, they are very easy to distribute. On top of that, the podcast directories are eagerly looking for content, so that the people... MILLIONS of people have something to listen to.

Fact is... only TWO DAYS after Apple added a podcast directory to its iTunes music store, users had subscribed to more than one million podcasts. Compare that to the 15,000 titles that were available at the time, and that's roughly 33 subscribers, per podcast, per day.

This is like the new wild frontier. It's reminiscent of the old days of SEO, when sites got indexed and repositioned in less than 24 hours. And like those old days of SEO, never has it been this easy to get your message out to the world.

Some of you might remember what I wrote just two months ago in the November 2005 issue of IMS, "Just wait and see... year 2006 will finally be the year of the podcast. Thanks to advances in technology and high speed internet, our self-directed education and entertainment just got a whole lot better."

Now only two months later it's official. Not only was the term Podcasting added to to the New Oxford American Dictionary, it's the WORD OF THE YEAR. Erin McKean, editor in chief of the New Oxford American Dictionary said, "Podcast has finally caught up with the rest of the iPod phenomenon.”

Podcasting is officially defined as, "A digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the internet for downloading to a personal audio player." Expect it to be added to the next update of the Dictionary, due out in early 2006.

How cool is that? Podcasting goes main stream. Becomes word of the year! Plus there's roughly 50 - and growing -  subscribers per day waiting for you in the iTunes directory. Sounds like the time to get in... is now!

Basically, if you can talk, you can open a new revenue stream for your online business. And you know what? It doesn't matter what your topic is. There are podcasts and podcast directories for just about everything.

For recording the audio, you can use any software that you want. You can get fancy wave form editors for cleaning up the sound after recording, or just get a basic recorder like the $29.99 QuickTime Pro 7.

QuickTime makes it super easy to create audio and video. It's just a single click to start recording and a single click to stop. Then - the best reason to use QuickTime - one click exports your recording to an iTunes friendly format.

Then to reach a potential audience of millions, it's time to publish your podcast to the iTunes directory. And get this... uploading the link to your podcast is free.  And you get listed on iTunes for free.

According to the Apple tutorial, "You can publish the exported file to the internet as an enclosure on a blogging service, such as Blogger, and wrapped in a podcast-friendly RSS feed. (Please note: the file must be hosted on a web server.) RSS feed providers, such as FeedBurner.com, make it easy to create an RSS file from your blog."

But before you submit the link to your RSS feed that contains your podcast enclosure, it's best to read the FAQs on the Apple site.

First you'll need to download, install and open iTunes 6. Click the Choose Genre button and select Podcast. Once there, click Submit a Podcast. Or, if you already have iTunes 6 installed on your computer, here is a shortcut link:

Click on the small "Learn more about podcasting on iTunes" link.

In addition, if you want even more details, here is the complete Podcasting and iTunes Technical Specification.

Or if you prefer to go "whole hog" and get into video podcasting using QuickTime Pro, Apple has provided quick and easy tutorials for that as well:

And one for Windows...

Currently there are a mere 25,000 podcasts available for free through the Apple iTunes site. Compare that tiny little number to the millions of copies of iTunes that have been downloaded, and the millions of people subscribing to podcasts. You can see that it's a huge market, just crying for content.

Oh right, I almost forgot... you're probably wondering how to monetize the podcast. This is where you can get as fancy or simple as you want.

The fancy way to monetize a podcast would be to insert chapters or graphics that play along with the QuickTime audio. It could be artwork, ebook covers, software boxes, any type of graphic along with a clickable link.

The simple way to monetize a podcast is to constantly refer to an individual web page throughout the audio. You could change the home page of your site with each podcast so it features the items that you spoke about. Or, better yet - because podcasts will remain "findable" on the web for as long as you leave them up - have a special interior web page on your site, for each particular podcast.

So my advice is to wrap your head around this and learn it as fast as you can. It doesn't have to be complicated. Outline what you want to talk about. Record your audio. Post the audio to your blog. Take the RSS feed url for your post and submit it to iTunes and the other podcasting directories.

Remember, this is a potential audience of millions. One that is growing by thousands of people with each and every passing day... and it's literally STARVING FOR CONTENT. As Mark Twain so wisely said, "Find out where the people are going and get there first."

I couldn't have put it any better. So now that you KNOW where the starving crowd of people is going, my only question to you is, are you going to be there to feed them - with monetized content - when they arrive?
